Files and backups
How do I move my Enshrouded world onto my HavoNode server?
On this page
An Enshrouded world is a handful of save files. Copy them from your PC, then upload them to your server’s savegame folder with the server stopped, in place of the server’s own world. Characters are saved on each player’s PC, so nobody needs to move those.
Note
Keen hasn’t published steps for moving a world from a PC onto a dedicated server, and their guide to save file names was written before 1.0 simplified the save folder. The steps below follow what Keen does document. Keep a copy of everything, and if your files don’t match what’s described here, open a ticket before you upload.
Find your world on your PC
Since 1.0, Enshrouded keeps local saves in this folder, where <you> is your Windows user name:
C:\Users\<you>\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default
If your world uses the Steam cloud instead, its files are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<your Steam ID>\1203620\remote. Your Steam ID here is the number Steam shows as your Friend Code, under Account in Steam’s settings. In the game, the world menu shows local and Steam cloud saves on separate tabs, so check which tab your world is on.
Pick out the world’s files
Keen’s save guide names each world’s files with a fixed code, given in the order you made your worlds. Your first world is 3ad85aea, your second 3bd85c7d and your third 38d857c4. Every file for a world starts with its code:
- the save itself, with numbered copies Enshrouded keeps for rolling back
- an
-indexfile, which says which copy is the latest _infofiles, which hold details such as the world’s name
If you’re not sure which code is yours, look at the modified dates. The world you played last has the newest files.
Move it
- If your HavoNode server is new, start it once from the Game Panel so it makes its
savegamefolder and a world of its own. Then stop it. - Close Enshrouded on your PC.
- Download a backup from your Game Panel first.
- In your Game Panel’s file manager, open the
savegamefolder in the server’s main folder. Note the code the server’s world files start with. A new server’s world is its first, so it should be3ad85aea. - If your world’s code is different from the server’s, stop here and open a ticket. Keen hasn’t published how a server picks up a world saved under another code, so we’ll sort it out with you rather than guess.
- Delete the server’s world files from
savegame. - Upload every file for your world into
savegame, straight into the folder rather than a folder inside it. - Start your server and join.
Your bases and everything you built should be there. If you arrive in a brand new world, the server didn’t pick up your files. Stop it, check the names and that the files sit directly in savegame, then start it again. Your backup has the server’s original world if you want it back.
Warning
Never copy files from a server that’s running, or from your PC while Enshrouded is open, or you can end up with a half-saved world. Keen also recommends taking a copy of all save files before you change any of them.
Characters stay with the players
Keen’s server FAQ is clear that character progress is stored on each player’s PC, and only the world is saved on the server. Everyone joins your server with the character they already have, keeping their gear, inventory, levels and skills.
Most crafting recipes come from NPCs and crafting stations, which belong to the world. Those come across with your world.
Worlds from Early Access
A world from before 1.0 still loads. The first time 1.0 opens an older save, it backs it up and converts it to the new format. If you haven’t played since before 1.0, load the world once in 1.0 on your PC first, so the game makes its own backup and does the conversion there, then copy it from the folder above.
Keen strongly suggests starting a new world for 1.0, though, because the world and the early game were reworked. Characters loaded into 1.0 for the first time also have their skill tree reset, so spend the points again.
Once your world is up, How do I change the game settings on my Enshrouded server? covers matching the difficulty you played on.
