Rust plans

Sized by how many
of you play.

Every plan comes with everything further down this page. What changes is the number of player slots and how much RAM the server can use. Tell us how many of you play and whether you'll run plugins, and we'll show you where to start.

Where?

Start with 100 slots and up to 16 GB for up to 100 players.

  • Up to 50 players

    Up to12 GBRAM · 50 slots

For up to 50 players. Facepunch's server guide asks for 12 GB of free RAM, so every Rust plan starts there.

An AI assistant in your Game Panel that reads your server's logs and config files, and changes nothing until you approve it.

Wipe day

First Thursday.
Every month.

Facepunch releases Rust's monthly update on the first Thursday of the month, usually from about 7pm UK time. Every server has to take it, and every server starts a new map when it does. Players call it forced wipe, and it's the busiest evening of the month.

Scheduled restarts and updates come with every server, so yours can pull the update in without you sitting at a PC waiting for it.

Map wipe
A new map. Bases, loot and everything built on the old map are gone, but players keep the blueprints they've learned.
Blueprint wipe
Everyone forgets what they've learned and works through the tech tree again. On forced wipe day this only happens when Facepunch's update notes say so.
Your own wipes
Between forced wipes the schedule is yours. Weekly and fortnightly map wipes are popular, and a new map size or seed needs a wipe too.
Plugins on wipe day
Oxide needs updating after each Rust update, so give it a minute once Rust has updated. Carbon updates itself.

Next forced wipe

First Thursday of every month, from about 19:00 UK time

Facepunch sets the date and doesn't publish a release time. It's almost always the first Thursday of the month from about 7pm UK time, but an update can land late or move for a holiday, so check Facepunch's news on the day. This clock follows the usual rule.

Plugins

Oxide or Carbon.
Pick one.

Rust plugins run on a modding framework, and a server runs one at a time. You have full access to your server's files, so you can install either.

  • The biggest library

    Oxide (uMod)

Most Rust plugins are written for Oxide, and umod.org lists them for free, each with its own docs and help threads. After each monthly Rust update, Oxide needs updating too.

Browse plugins on umod.org (opens in a new tab)
  • The newer one

    Carbon

Carbon calls itself a drop-in replacement for Oxide, so most Oxide plugins run on it as they are. It updates itself after Rust updates, so wipe day is one less job.

Read the Carbon docs (opens in a new tab)

Can't decide? Pick Oxide if you're following a guide, since most are written for it. Pick Carbon if you'd rather it kept itself up to date. Plugins are also a good reason to start a size up, and the plan picker does that for you.

Settings

Change the map,
change the rules.

These all live in your server's config, which you can edit from the panel. Here's what each one does, in plain English, with the setting behind it.

Map size and seed

Rust builds its standard map from two numbers: a size, from 1000 to 6000 metres across (4500 if you don't set one), and a seed. The same pair always makes the same map, so you can preview it on a site like rustmaps.com first. Bigger maps need more RAM, and changing either one means a wipe.

Custom maps

Made or bought a custom map? Put the .map file somewhere with a direct download link and point your server at it.

Settingserver.levelurl

Name, description and banner

How your server looks in Rust's server browser: its name, the description players read before joining, a header image and a link to your Discord or website.

Tags

Show your wipe schedule and style in the server browser, with tags like weekly, vanilla or PvE, so the right players find you.

Settingserver.tags

Player limit

How many people can be on at once. Your RAM should match it, which is why our plans start from your player count.

Settingserver.maxplayers

Admins and moderators

Give yourself and your mods their powers from the live console, using each person's Steam ID, then save so it sticks after a restart.

Settingsowneridmoderatoridserver.writecfg

PvE or PvP

Rust is PvP out of the box. Switch to PvE and players can't hurt each other. Plugins give you finer control if you want it.

Settingserver.pve

Decay

How quickly buildings fall apart when nobody keeps them up. Turn it down for a more relaxed server, or set it to 0 to switch it off.

Joining

Get your group
on the server.

For Rust on PC, through Steam. Rust Console Edition is a separate game, so console players can't join.

  1. Grab your address

Your server's IP and port are in the panel. Your free subdomain works too, if you'd rather share a name than numbers.

  2. Connect from the console

In Rust, press F1, type client.connect followed by your address, and press Enter. Send your mates the same line.

  3. Find it next time

Once you've played, your server shows up in the server browser's history, so getting back in takes one click. Other players can search for it by name.

Rust F1 console · example

client.connect 203.0.113.24:28015

An example address. 28015 is Rust's usual game port; yours is in the panel.

Every game server comes with

  • DDoS protection
  • NVMe storage
  • Daily backups you can download
  • Free subdomain
  • Full file and config access
  • Scheduled restarts and updates
  • Live console
  • Switch games any time

FAQ

Rust questions,
straight answers.

What people ask before they rent a Rust server.

How much RAM does a Rust server need?

We recommend up to 12 GB for up to 50 players, up to 16 GB for up to 100 players and up to 20 GB for up to 160 players. Our RAM sizes are a guide, based on player count. What a server really uses also depends on its mods and plugins, its settings (map size, view distance and spawn rates all count), how much its world grows over time, and the game's own updates. If you're planning a modded server, start a size up.

Can I install Oxide or Carbon plugins?

Yes. You get full access to your server's files, so you can install Oxide (uMod) or Carbon and add plugins. Use one or the other, since Carbon's own docs say they can't run side by side.

When does Rust force wipe?

On the first Thursday of every month, when Facepunch releases its monthly update, usually from about 7pm UK time. Every server takes the update and starts a new map. Facepunch can move the date, so check their news on the day.

Can I wipe my server whenever I like?

Yes. Between forced wipes the schedule is yours. A map wipe means deleting the map and save files and restarting; a blueprint wipe deletes the blueprints file too. You can do both from the file manager, and our assistant can walk you through it.

Can I change the map size and seed?

Yes. Set server.worldsize (1000 to 6000) and server.seed in your config. A new size or seed makes a new map, so it takes effect when you wipe.

Can I use a custom map?

Yes. Put the .map file somewhere with a direct download link, set server.levelurl to that link and restart. A new map means a fresh save, so it's best done on a wipe.

How do my friends join?

They press F1 in Rust and type client.connect, then your server's address and port from the panel, or your free subdomain. They can also search for your server by name in the server browser.

Can Rust Console Edition players join?

No. Rust Console Edition is a separate game with its own servers. Our Rust servers are for Rust on PC, through Steam.

Can I move my existing Rust server over?

Yes. Upload your map, save, config and plugin files through the file manager and your world carries on. Moving from Oxide to Carbon at the same time? Carbon's docs explain how to bring your plugin settings across.

Where are your Rust servers?

In London, close to players across the UK and Europe.
